We are deeply saddened by the brutal homophobic attack at the LGBT nightclub Pulse in Orlando, which killed 50 people from our community, and injured a further 53.
Our thoughts today are with those affected, and the whole LGBT community. This attack sheds light on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia at its ugliest and reminds us how important it is to stand in solidarity as a community, and with allies, who are so important to our movement.
It is still illegal to be gay in 73 countries, and in 10 it is punishable by death. There are more than 100 hate crimes against LGBT people reported in Britain each week, and two thirds of people who experienced a hate crime did not report it.
What has happened in Orlando reminds us that we still have a long way to go before all LGBT people are truly free to be themselves without fear of hate, violence or discrimination just for being who they are, and loving who they love.
We will not feel free to be ourselves until many more people stand together with us and celebrate LGBT people as equal members of society, in every community and in every part of the world.
Across the country communities are showing their support. Here are just some of the events taking place:
Everyone can play their part in changing attitudes towards LGBT people. Help us work towards acceptance without exception for LGBT people across the world.
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Mai 17, 2016Mai 17, 2016
Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Please join us in marking the day. We want to celebrate the people who have been #ByYourSide and send our support to LGBT people here and abroad, so that everyone, everywhere, is free to be themselves.
We are #ByYourSide.
Too many people around the world live in fear of persecution and discrimination because of who they are and who they love.
Share our #ByYourSide graphic, tag your friends, and ask them to join you at a Pride event this summer.
Together we can change hearts and minds, and work towards acceptance without exception for all.
